Last weekend Auckland Sea Kayaks collaborated with Experiencing Marine Reserves for the second Tahuna Torea Kayak Day, despite overcast weather. The event successfully hosted 50 participants, offering a unique perspective of the Tāmaki Estuary.
Our role is this kaupapa was to offer guided kayak excursions along the Tahuna Torea Reserve coastline, complemented by on-water commentary from the EMR crew. Participants observed various bird species and marine life while paddling, and for many, it marked their first ever kayaking experience. The coastline, a critical nesting area for shore and seabirds, served as an educational platform for participants to understand habitat conservation.
On land, local conservationist Shaun Lee led a guided walk, emphasizing the ecological significance of the estuarine habitat in Tāmaki Makaurau. Rochelle, a local kairaranga, conducted a harakeke weaving workshop, enabling participants to create decorative ika/fish to take home.
An epic event, made possible through the support of sponsors Ōrākei Local Board, Aktive - Auckland Sport & Recreation, and The Bobby Stafford-Bush Foundation. Appreciation goes to EMR volunteers and Shaun Lee for capturing the event through photography.
