New Zealand Sailing Trust and Auckland Sea Kayaks are both outdoor education, youth development, and tourism providers operating in the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park. Our programmes encourage both New Zealanders and international students to get active in the great outdoors.
The 5-Day Sail and Kayak Programme presents a unique opportunity for young adventurers to embark on a transformative journey of self-discovery. Throughout this immersive experience, participants will develop a heightened awareness of environmental conservation and the significance of safeguarding our natural treasures, all while exploring the picturesque landscapes of the Hauraki Gulf.

About the 5-Day Sail and Kayak Programme
Spanning five exhilarating days, the 5-Day Sail and Kayak Programme encompasses both sailing and kayaking expeditions, designed to challenge and inspire students between the ages of 13 and 18. As participants navigate the waters, they will be called upon to demonstrate resilience, collaboration, and determination, pushing themselves to achieve individual and collective goals. Along the way, they will acquire invaluable life skills, forge lasting friendships, and emerge from the experience with a profound sense of personal growth.
This programme is inclusive and welcomes young New Zealanders from all walks of life. Moreover, it aligns with the criteria for the practice and qualifying journeys required for the Silver Award, as well as serving as a practice journey or residential component for the Gold Award of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award.
Two nights will be spent aboard the iconic vessels Lion New Zealand or Steinlager 2, vessels steeped in New Zealand’s rich sailing history, having circumnavigated the globe under the helm of Sir Peter Blake in the Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race. Participants will actively engage in sailing activities, including learning the ropes, meal preparation, and participating in a watch rotation system to gain insights into various aspects of seamanship. Additionally, shoreline clean-ups, raft-building exercises, and problem-solving activities will further enrich the learning experience, fostering personal growth and skill development.
The remaining two nights will be dedicated to kayaking adventures with Auckland Sea Kayaks, where students will receive comprehensive training in kayaking techniques and wilderness camping practices within a supportive and enjoyable environment. Guided by experienced instructors, participants will take turns leading and following their peers, honing their navigation skills and embracing the principles of Leave No Trace. Moreover, discussions on the applicability of these principles to their immediate surroundings and daily lives will deepen their understanding of environmental stewardship.
Regardless of their participation in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award, students are encouraged to embark on this journey of exploration and self-discovery. Join us as we navigate the waters of the Hauraki Gulf, forging unforgettable memories and cultivating a deep appreciation for the natural world.
