Rangitoto Island - A Place of Ancestral Stories
Many place names in Aotearoa (New Zealand) reflect the rich histories of our tūpuna (ancestors). Rangitoto translates to `Bloody Sky`, with its full name, Ngā Rangi-i-totongia-a Tama-te-kapua, meaning "The days of the bleeding of Tama-te-kapua." This name recalls the story of Tama-te-kapua, captain of the Arawa waka, who was badly wounded after losing a battle to the Tainui iwi at Islington Bay.

As we celebrate Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, let’s explore Motukorea (also known as Browns Island) in the Hauraki Gulf.
The name Motukorea combines “motu”, meaning island, with “korea” or “torea”, meaning oystercatcher. This island remains a vital habitat for these coastal birds, as well as for the threatened New Zealand dotterel. 🐦🌿

🌊 Te Wiki o te Reo Māori: Celebrating Place Names in Tāmaki Makaurau 🌿
Throughout the week, we’re uncovering the stories of place names that are significant to both our journeys and our connection to Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland).
Today, we explore the Hauraki Gulf / Tīkapa Moana Marine Park.
Hauraki translates to "north wind" – a name that reflects how the gulf is only exposed to open sea from the north. Hau means wind, and raki means north. 🌬️
According to Māori legend, Ureia, a taniwha in the form of a whale, protects these waters. 🐋
