Kayak Clean-Ups with Purpose: Protecting Auckland’s Waterways

At Auckland Sea Kayaks, we believe exploring our marine environment goes hand-in-hand with caring for it. That’s why we regularly team up with the Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust to host kayak clean-up days—hands-on events where paddling meets purpose.

Whether we’re deep in the mangroves or skimming alongside the city shoreline, these clean-up events help remove waste from some of Auckland’s most precious blue spaces while reconnecting people with the waterways that surround them.

What to Expect

Each event is a mix of action, learning, and community spirit. Here’s how the day typically flows:

  • Welcome & karakia – We begin by grounding ourselves in the kaupapa of the day, acknowledging the environment and setting shared intentions.

  • Safety & gear-up – We provide all the essentials—kayaks, life jackets, gloves, and rubbish grabbers—plus a quick briefing to ensure everyone feels comfortable and confident.

  • On the water – You’ll head out in pairs to explore the surrounding awa or harbour, collecting litter from the water and shoreline as you go. Expect everything from discarded bottles to mystery items that spark great stories back on land.

  • Debrief & sort – After returning to shore, we sort and weigh the collected rubbish. We share highlights, swap stories, and reflect on the impact—both immediate and long term.

  • Wrap up – We close with a karakia and often some time to connect over kai.

Where We Paddle

Our clean-up days take us to a wide range of sites across Tāmaki Makaurau, including:

  • Whau River (Kelston) – This urban waterway saw a team of volunteers collecting debris and learning how to monitor river health through activities like clarity tube testing and citizen science.

  • Rangitopuni River (Riverhead) – This trip focused on native fish habitats, including īnanga spawning grounds, with support from freshwater experts and cultural educators.

  • Motu Manawa Marine Reserve – One of our most impactful clean-ups this year took place here. With support from local volunteers, we removed over 135kg of waste—including microplastics—from this ecologically significant area. Alongside the clean-up, participants got to experience the unique wetland and marine habitats that make Motu Manawa so special.

Why People Join

  • To give back to the environment they love to explore

  • To be part of a positive, community-driven initiative

  • To enjoy the outdoors while doing something meaningful

  • Because it’s fun—and free!

No prior kayaking experience is needed—just a willingness to get involved and maybe get a little wet in the process.
