A Rich Tapestry of History
Motukorea/Browns Island is steeped in history, both Maori and European. Before the arrival of Europeans, the island was heavily cultivated by local Maori and features three ancient pa sites (fortified villages). The largest of these pa sites occupies the slopes of the main scoria cone, adding a sense of historical wonder to your visit.
In the 19th century, the island became significant in European history as well. It was the first home of Sir Logan Campbell, the mayor of Auckland, and William Brown, the first Auckland member of parliament. These men are considered the founders of Auckland city, and the island was one of the first European land deals in the region.
The Adventure Continues
Upon arriving at Motukorea, we trek to the summit of the island, enjoying panoramic views and learning about its rich history along the way. Light refreshments are provided on the island, giving you a chance to relax and refuel before heading back.
The tour includes approximately one hour of sea kayaking each way, with informative stops and historical interpretation throughout the journey. It’s a perfect blend of physical activity, education, and relaxation.
