Moonlight kayak to Browns island

Moonlight kayak to Browns island

Auckland Sea Kayaks offers a exceptional Moonlight kayak tour to Browns island.

Imagine quietly paddling across a glassy calm sea with the lights of Auckland city as your backdrop… This evening kayak tour will take you to Browns Island, a small volcanic island close to Auckland city. You’ll enjoy a picnic supper served on the summit, plus the novelty of kayaking at night.

St Heliers Beach (about 10 minutes from the city centre) is where you will meet your guide for your briefing and instruction. You’ll be outfitted with a paddle jacket (wind and waterproof), sprayskirt and buoyancy vest.

The double kayaks you will use are stable and easy to paddle. We head away from the beach around 6.00pm and paddle around Achilles Point and across to Browns Island which takes about 1.25 hours at an easy pace.

We land at Crater Bay at the back of the island and take a short but steep 10-minute walk to the summit to watch the sun set over Auckland.

After the sun has disappeared, the kayaks are fitted with night-lights. Paddling at night is an amazing feeling, and the lights of Auckland make a great backdrop as you make your way back to St Heliers where you arrive around 10.30pm.

The distance is fine for novice kayakers and we maintain the highest safety standards possible.

Auckland Sea Kayaks can run this tour for groups with a minimum of 6 people.

Meet: St Heliers central boat ramp

Start time: 6.00pm

Return: 10.30pm

Vote for Fish of the Year!

This year, we're championing the Anchovy—did you know they're the eco-warriors fighting climate change in the Hauraki Gulf and beyond? By gobbling carbon and helping regulate oceanic climates, anchovies are the carbon-crushing champions we didn't know we needed. Saving the planet never looked so good! Auckland Sea Kayaks is pleased to be supporting the annual Fish of the Year | Te Ika o Te Tau competition with our friends @emr_nz and @waihekemarineproject

Our fish for this year is the humble Anchovy - while small and nimble like a sea kayak, they play a crucial role in marine ecosystems by acting as a primary food source for larger marine-life and seabirds.
