Staff Adventures: Nic sailing the pacific

In June 2018 ‘Ambrosia’ skippered by Nic Mead, Auckland Sea Kayaks sea kayak guide of 8 years, departed Auckland, New Zealand for a four month expedition to some of the most remote parts of the South Pacific Ocean.  Nic and the crew of Ambrosia arrived back in Auckland, full of epic adventure stories. Below is a short extract of the adventure.

1st stop is Westhaven Marina a bit of city living before the high seas 29th of May, 2018.

Few, days in the city before the slow sail north.

June 6th My Location:

Course: NNE 26 T
Speed: 15 km/h lots albatros, half head sail out and 3 reefs in mainsail

June 8th We’re in the thick of it now. 4+ meter swells and big winds. some might call it a roller coaster. Rowan reckons bigger than last Sydney >Hobart. All still smiling. High speed drogue out.

June 10th
Tough 24hr hit by a gale yesterday at 4pm with 40knot wind heavy seas just left us heading NW canceled minerva now relaxed motorsailing .

June 11th
Drifted under parachute anchor while waiting For heavy seas and seasickness to pass. everyone woke up stoked so hping for easy saing 4 final 450miles. . .

June 12th
Whales, pancakes, swims, salad, sun and some sailing. The life of tropical sailors!

June 15th
Waiting for customs after a true sea adventure full of weather, waves and rum.

The next 2 months were spent exploring, Vanuatu and New Caledonia.

A weather window was spotted and we headed home. Fast reaching conditions, and we covered the 1000 nautical mile sail home to Opua, Bay of Islands in 6.5 days.

Back in Pine Harbor after a difficult sail down the coast. Smiling, happy and hungry.

Amazing adventures with a Duke of Edinburgh group last weekend. We explored loads of sea caves, learnt about sustainable journeys and the 7 steps of leave no trace @dukeofednz
Stunning morning with flat water as we got set up for another @emr_nz day. Loads of locals learning about how amazing Lake Rototoa is. For those that don't about this amazing sand dune fresh water lake which is located at the northern end of the south head of the Kaipara Harbour should go and check it out. Or even better wait until EMR runs another of their legendary experience days @visitauckland
