3 Day Mahurangi Coastal Adventure
Explore the Beauty of Auckland’s Mahurangi Region on a 3-Day Kayaking Adventure
Just an hour north of Auckland, escape into the tranquil beauty of Mahurangi on this three-day kayaking and camping journey. Launching from Sullivan’s Bay, you’ll paddle through sheltered estuaries, open coastal waters, and marine reserves, with overnight stays at remote campsites such as Motuora Island, Te Muri, and Lagoon Bay.
A highlight of the expedition is Motuora Island, a predator-free sanctuary and one of the Hauraki Gulf’s most remarkable conservation success stories. Safe landing beaches and well-maintained walking tracks make it an ideal stopover, with sweeping views across the Gulf. Since the 1990s, Motuora has played a vital role in kiwi conservation as a “kiwi crèche,” where North Island brown kiwi chicks are raised to maturity before being released to the wild. At night, you may even hear or glimpse kiwi moving through the undergrowth—an unforgettable experience that few visitors to Auckland ever have. By day, the island is alive with native birdlife such as bellbird, saddleback, and tūī, making it a paradise for nature lovers.
Depending on tides and conditions, you may also explore Te Muri Beach—a pristine stretch of sand accessible only by foot or kayak—or the sheltered Lagoon Bay, perfect for swimming, short hikes, and wildlife encounters. Each destination offers a different perspective on Mahurangi’s rich biodiversity and coastal charm.
