• Where can I park for the City Lights Night Kayak Tour or City Scenes Day Kayak Tour?

  There is plenty of paid parking available around Z Pier and Westhaven Marina, just a short walk from the departure point for both our City Lights Night Kayak Tour and City Scenes Day Kayak Tour.

  Please note that cash is not accepted for parking. Payment can be made using:

  • A debit or credit card
  • Apple Pay
  • Google Pay

  We recommend arriving 10 minutes before your tour departure to allow plenty of time to find a park, pay for parking and check in with your guide.

• Can I bring my phone, GoPro or camera?

  Absolutely! We encourage guests to capture their adventure and the incredible scenery along the way.

  You’re welcome to bring your phone, GoPro, camera or other photography equipment on the tour. We provide dry bags to store your belongings safely inside the kayak while you’re paddling.

  If you’d like to use your phone during the tour, we recommend bringing a waterproof case or pouch for added protection. There is also a pocket on your life jacket, making it easy to keep your phone close at hand for quick photo opportunities.

  Please note that using your phone or camera while kayaking is entirely at your own risk. Although conditions are often calm, sea kayaking is an adventure activity and electronics can be damaged if they’re dropped or exposed to water.

  There are plenty of opportunities to stop and take photos throughout the tour, and our guides are always happy to help take pictures of you and your group.

• Are there any physical requirements to join your guided kayak tours?

  • Our guided sea kayak tours are designed for beginners and no previous kayaking experience is required. However, all participants must meet a few minimum safety requirements to ensure they can take part safely and comfortably.

    • Weight & Size: Participants must weigh 120 kg (265 lb) or less and be able to fit comfortably into our sea kayaks, which have a seat width of approximately 65 cm (25.5 inches). This also ensures our guides can safely assist guests in the unlikely event of a capsize.
    • Mobility & Endurance: You should be able to paddle and remain seated in a kayak for up to 45 minutes at a time without getting out to stretch. Our tours involve moderate physical activity and may require getting in and out of the kayak from the shoreline or a beach.
    • English Language: All tours are conducted in English, and participants must have a basic understanding of spoken English so they can understand the mandatory safety briefing, follow instructions from their guide, and know what to do in an emergency. Spanish-speaking guides are available on request (subject to availability), and we also provide Mandarin safety resources to help Mandarin-speaking guests better understand our safety procedures.

• Can I join a tour if I don’t speak English?

  All participants on Auckland Sea Kayaks tours must have a basic understanding of English. This is a safety requirement, as every guest must be able to understand our guide’s instructions, follow the mandatory safety briefing, and know what to do in the event of an emergency while on the water.

  To help make our tours more accessible for international visitors:

  • Spanish-speaking kayak guides are available on request (subject to availability).
  • We also have Mandarin safety resources available to help Mandarin-speaking guests better understand our safety procedures and key instructions.

• How long is the walk from Auckland CBD to the departure point at Z Pier?

  The walk from Auckland CBD to Westhaven Marina, Z Pier, takes about 15-20 minutes, depending on your starting location and walking speed. It’s a scenic route, passing through the Viaduct Harbour and Wynyard Quarter.

• What happens if the weather is bad?

  Your safety always comes first. As a QualWorX-audited, certified Adventure Activity Operator, Auckland Sea Kayaks closely monitors weather conditions in the lead-up to every tour and continually reassesses forecasts throughout the day.

  We operate within strict safety operating parameters for wind, sea state and weather conditions. If conditions remain within these limits, your tour will go ahead as planned.

  If the forecast is damp, we provide waterproof paddling jackets and warm fleeces to help keep you comfortable throughout your kayaking experience.

  If weather conditions are unsafe for kayaking, you can choose to:

  • Reschedule to another available tour date, or
  • Receive a full refund if no suitable alternative date is available.

  Because Auckland’s weather can change quickly, the final decision on whether a tour will operate is often made on the day, based on the latest forecasts together with actual wind and sea conditions.

  Our standard minimum ages for public scheduled tours are:

  • Rangitoto Day Sea Kayak Tour: 14 years
  • Motukorea (Browns Island) Sea Kayak Tour: 12 years
  • City Lights Night Kayak Tour: 12 years
  • City Scenes Day Kayak Tour: 12+ on public tours | 10+ for private family groups
  • Guided Rangitoto Walking Tour: 8 years

  If you’re travelling as a family, we may be able to accommodate younger children on a private tour. Because the guide is dedicated exclusively to your group, we can tailor the pace and experience to better suit younger paddlers.

  For families with younger children, we generally recommend our City Scenes Day Kayak Tour. Operating within the sheltered waters of Auckland’s Waitematā Harbour, it features the calmest conditions and the easiest paddling, making it our most family-friendly kayaking experience.
