One of the many special parts of Rangitoto Island — and other areas of Auckland — is the network of lava caves below our feet. Formed as molten lava flowing beneath a cooling crust, the lava eventually drained away, leaving behind these incredible natural tunnels. They offer a fascinating insight into the island’s volcanic and geological history, and make for some fun exploring, as experienced by our guests on a Rangitoto Island day tour earlier this week.

A bit different to our usual — but an important and stunningly beautiful day with @mountainstosea.org.nz, conducting a kayak survey of the Pāremoremo River. Their team are assessing this environment for feasible īnanga spawning habitats, and we got to explore native canopies and tributaries in the process.
