7 Day Great Barrier Island Kayak Expedition

7 Day Great Barrier Island Kayak Expedition

7 days kayaking around Great Barrier Island is as good as it gets for sea kayakers. It’s home to natural rugged beauty and untouched wilderness.

Over the years kayaking clients have been asking for a multi-day tour that is unique, challenging and in a stunning environment. Great Barrier Island located on the outskirts of the Hauraki Gulf has the answer. This tour is designed for our clients, or future clients that can already paddle at an intermediate level.

Our ferry, operated by Sea Link, departs from central Auckland and after 5 hours we find ourselves in Tryphena, a small southern settlement on the island.  From here we slip into our boats and away exploring and camping for 6 nights.

Great Barrier Island is one of the most tranquil and unspoiled places you’ll ever find. On this trip you will discover the island’s golden beaches, crystal-clear waters and vast native forests – on Great Barrier Island, nature is king.

The tour has a minimum number of 4 and maximum number of 8 people. Contact us for dates and availability.

In 2000 the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park, New Zealand’s first national park of the sea, was created to recognise and protect the unique features and environments of the gulf. The marine park is a treasured living space that connects people and places, and links the land and sea. It includes marine reserves, Department of Conservation and community group managed islands and mainland reserves, and is a unique concept in New Zealand.

Come and explore this magical place yourself, discovering the coastline via sea kayak.

  • “I can thoroughly recommend the 5 day sea kayak trip on Great Barrier Island – had an amazing time – the highlight would have to be the dolphins that swam around us and put on a great show. Beautiful beaches, stunning coastline and great places to camp along the way. We were in lucky to have such an experienced guide as Mo Kennedy – very knowledgeable about reading the weather, currents etc and making sure we were safe – but still open to challenging our kayaking skills if we were up for it. Also makes excellent coffee and the food was great. A trip to remember.”

Vote for Fish of the Year!

This year, we're championing the Anchovy—did you know they're the eco-warriors fighting climate change in the Hauraki Gulf and beyond? By gobbling carbon and helping regulate oceanic climates, anchovies are the carbon-crushing champions we didn't know we needed. Saving the planet never looked so good! Auckland Sea Kayaks is pleased to be supporting the annual Fish of the Year | Te Ika o Te Tau competition with our friends @emr_nz and @waihekemarineproject

Our fish for this year is the humble Anchovy - while small and nimble like a sea kayak, they play a crucial role in marine ecosystems by acting as a primary food source for larger marine-life and seabirds.
