Conservation Week 2019
Conservation Week. New Zealand is known globally for our efforts in conservation. We’re nowhere near done, but we’ve made considerable progress to protect our native species and bring them back from the brink of extinction over the past 50 years. Auckland Sea Kayaks is actively involved with events over the week with Nic Mead from Auckland Sea Kayaks heading to the launch tonight at Kelly Taltons.
As New Zealanders, we can be proud of our commitment to preserving our natural and historic heritage, supported by environmental legislation, and community and iwi input. There’s no place on earth quite like it.
This week is the 50th anniversary of Conservation Week. This is our history.A few events in Auckland through out the week that we recommend checking out
Lighting up the Auckland Harbour Bridge for Conservation Week is a joint project between DOC and Auckland Council. The light show runs on 249 solar panels and uses 90,000 programmable LED lights permanently installed on the bridge to create colour and abstract visuals.
The focus of the installation is nature in Auckland. The light show will run every 30 minutes between 6.30pm and midnight from Saturday 14th to Sunday 22nd September. It will be accompanied by a soundtrack, accessible from the Vector Lights website.
Plant at Tree
Be a part of the movement to restore our flora.
New ZeaLand is lucky enough to have very unique plants. 80% of our trees, ferns and flowering plants are endemic, which means that they’re found only in New Zealand.
It’s important for us to plant native trees as they support all sorts of wildlife and are vital to a healthy ecosystem. To give nature a helping hand, why not plant a native – or two!

Fancy yourself a quiz shark? We hope you won’t be out of your depth with our night of marine themed questions and fancy dress.
Water you doing on Thursday the 19th of September? You should be joining us for our Conservation Week Quiz Night! But don’t let us pier-pressure you. We will be testing your marine knowledge, dance moves and team work.
Prizes for the top teams as well as for the best dressed table. Just remember no ‘nudie’-branches. Don’t go fishing for compliments.
We will be running a raffle and silent auction so bring your treasure chests and get ready for a reel-y great night.
With fronds like these who needs anenomes – get together your teams of 6 and get your swell costumes ready.
Proceeds are going towards volunteer development and running our Auckland region.
