Sea Kayaking on the Manukau Harbor

Sea Kayaking on the Manukau Harbor

We sea kayaked on the Manuaku Harbor to test out a some new kayaks. We launched from Huia (boat ramp corner of Whatipu and Huia rd) as you can launch at low tide and paddled to Whatipu.

The sea kayak paddle distance was approx 7km each way. As the Manuaku is tidal we left 2 hours before low tide and returned on the ingoing tide.

It is a great paddle and recommend it for intermediate paddlers. We had a strongish wind which produced some fun waves to play on.

Some random information in regards to Huia place name

‘Huia was previously known as Te Huia as the area is thought to be named after a Māori chief, Te Huia, who stayed in the bay and was so taken by the area that he remained there’.

Great place to paddle and test the skills.
